[00:00:00] Welcome to Truth for the journey from Clifford Baptist Church, 635 Fletcher's Level Road in Amherst. Tonight, Pastor Jeffrey returns to the Battleground series with familiar phrase using various scriptures. At times, we have been looking at how that Satan works in our lives. And you and I, as believers, we are subject to those attacks. And that is what this series has kind of brought forth in discussing the spiritual battleground that we all face. And we have acknowledged that there is a war raging.
[00:00:33] And sometimes we know that we're involved in that war, that we are the targets of Satan. And that is not a time that we desire, but it is a time that we know that is permitted by God to test and to strengthen our faith. And we have identified the enemy is not one another or not people in your family. The enemy is Satan himself.
[00:00:56] And we have talked about some of his tactics of twisting and lying and being deceptive in order to get a foothold into your lives and into your mind. Our last message was a battle of the mind focusing. That is where Satan desires to be in the Christian's mind to get them to doubt and to think that they're not good enough and just to lead them away from the Lord. And so we understand that the principalities and powers and princes of authority and the spiritual wickedness in high places are things that we cannot see.
[00:01:34] We want to see those things. We want to know what's going on around us. But oftentimes they are things that we cannot see and the importance of taking every thought captive. And so tonight we're going to look at some very common and familiar battles that we can identify as spiritual warfare. There have been a lot of people say, what does spiritual warfare look like? Well, we're going to define some of those areas over the next two studies of these are the areas where Satan can get a foothold. Satan can work. We may label it one thing, but it is a tactic of Satan to get into your life. It is a battlefield and it seems like oftentimes and that he is winning. Wrote down a couple of quotes that I want to share with you. G.K. chesterton says this. A true soldier fights not because what he hates in front of him, but because of what he loves behind him. Think about that for a second. Very true. There's another quote that says this Christian take special care not to trust in the armor of God, but trust in the God of the armor. And so as we put that armor on, we realize that God is behind it all and that he is the one that is our defender and so tonight we fight the familiar phrase. And that's what I've titled this message. Familiar phrase or familiar battles. And this is part one. We're gonna go through 10 battles that we face. Five of them tonight, five of them in the next lesson. And I want you to look at first 1 Kings chapter 18 and 19. I'm not gonna read all of it just yet, but the first area, if you wanna write em down, you can. The first area of battle is that of anxiety and fear. It is probably the most common battle. It is the one that we most hear of familiar, that spiritual tact that Satan uses.
[00:03:34] One of the favorites to look at is David. We can look at David, but I want you to know tonight you can look at Jeffrey too, okay? Just as much as you see fear in David. And there are times you probably, if you looked hard enough, you could see fear and anxiety in your pastor. But I want you to know this. Psalm 27:1 says this. The Lord is my light and whom shall I fear?
[00:03:59] If you are a believer tonight, the Lord is on your side, the Lord is in your corner. However you want to word that the Lord fights for you. And you can look to him.
[00:04:10] As we think about David, as we think about Peter, we think about him walking on water, we think about his denial of Jesus. Tonight I want to just take a quick glance at Elijah. I want you to set the scene for you in First Kings 18:19 so we don't spend the all night on one point. Okay? But that scene is this. He is standing alone against 450 prophets of Baal.
[00:04:38] So you do the math. One against 450, that's what he's up against. And these prophets on Mount Carmel are saying that their God is the true God. And Elijah is saying, no, no, no, I serve the true God. And so they agree on that mountain that they will put their gods to the test. And as those that worship baal, those prophets on the altar, they lay everything. And they call. The Bible says all morning on baal and there is no voice.
[00:05:12] And they cry louder. And then they begin to cut themselves.
[00:05:17] And guess what? No voice. If you read the story, I encourage you to read chapters 18 and 19. Elijah pours water on the wood of the altar three times.
[00:05:29] And then you know the story. Most of you know the story. He calls on God and God sets that altar on fire. It consumes everything, the wood and the water, it licks it up. Now what in the world?
[00:05:42] What a mountaintop experience.
[00:05:45] How many of you know after the mountaintop experience, you Gotta get off that mountain. How many of you have ever had a good Sunday of worship? And the following week has been just a dread.
[00:05:56] You feel tested and torn and pulled and you've had a good Mount Top experience.
[00:06:03] And then, hey, God, you were with me Sunday. What happened? Well, guess what? That's where Elijah is. Elijah comes down off of that mountain after seeing that his God is real and his God is true and his God should be worshiped. He comes down and here's what he finds out.
[00:06:24] He finds out there's someone that wants to take his life. He went from one against 450 to a scenario where he's one on one.
[00:06:35] How many of you think one on one? I like my odds there, right?
[00:06:40] They're greater than 1 versus 450.
[00:06:44] But he was afraid, he was fearful.
[00:06:47] He was thinking that his life was in jeopardy. Look at real quick. First Kings, chapter 19. First Kings, chapter 19. I'm going to read verses three and four. I'm not going to read this whole scenario. Verse chapter 18. You can see that Elijah, it ends with the hand of the Lord being upon Elijah. He comes off of that mountain. And listen to verse three of chapter 19. It talks about. Jezebel is going to send a messenger in verse number two unto Elijah, saying, so let the gods do to me. And more also if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time. Let me translate that for you. Jezebel says this, I'm gonna kill you, Elijah, just like you destroyed those prophets. I'm gonna kill you. I'm coming after you. Look at verse number three. And when he saw that he arose and went for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there, but he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree, and he requested for himself that he might die. And he said, is it enough? Now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers. How does Elijah get here? After a great experience, a mountaintop experience with God. Now he is running and he is fearful and he is afraid and. And he is questioning God, even to the point, God, will you take my life? Does anybody in here deal with agnostophobia? That is a fear of the unknown. When you don't know what's going on, when you really want to know what's going on, when you need to put your faith to the test and you don't, when you just step up and say, God I'm going to trust you. And you say, no, no, no, no, no. When God has won the battle before and you quickly forget, can we relate to Elijah? I think so. I think so. You know, our heart rate increases, our stomach becomes upset, the decisions that we make are affected, our blood pressure goes high because we don't know what's going on.
[00:08:47] We get worried and we get stressed. We get fearful that something's going to happen. God, you're not going to show up again.
[00:08:54] And then the Lord visits Elijah and you can read on in that still small voice when he heard it, that voice says this. Elijah, what are you doing right here? What are you doing here? Fear drove him to a cave, into a hiding place, a place that he should not have been, that God did not intend for him to be. And he was fearful over one person and what they said they were going to do. And yet God came to him. Here's what I don't want you to forget tonight. Your deepest fears, your deepest questions, even your most craziest decisions and thoughts.
[00:09:29] God can meet you right there where you are. And God can prove that even though he's already proved himself before, he can show you that he is true and that he is worthy to be followed and worshiped and praised. Tonight, how many of us need to just trust the Lord in the times that seem to be fearful? For Elijah, the battleground was fear. And God pulled him out of that, met him where he was.
[00:09:55] And tonight I believe he can do that for you. Fear cripples us sometimes, doesn't it?
[00:09:59] For some of us, fear causes us to fight God, fight against what he wants.
[00:10:05] Fear causes us to run from God, go the opposite direction.
[00:10:10] Fear causes us to avoid people.
[00:10:13] It has its physical implications on us as well.
[00:10:18] And I'm not even talking about the mental part.
[00:10:21] And so fear can cripple us.
[00:10:24] And so tonight, if that describes you, I've got a verse for you. Second Timothy, chapter number one, verse number seven. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
[00:10:42] Here's what you need to do.
[00:10:44] If fear is the battlefield for you, you need to take two Timothy, chapter number one, verse, verse number seven. Don't tattoo it on your skin, tattoo it on your heart, put it in your mind and you claim God's word as you face your fear.
[00:11:01] Battleground number one is fear and anxiety.
[00:11:06] Let's move to the second place of battle. How about anger and resentment?
[00:11:13] The emotion of anger, I believe, is the battlefield that Satan is well Aware of.
[00:11:20] Some people deal harder with this or deal more with this than others.
[00:11:24] But someone said it best, that if you don't get control of anger, it will control you.
[00:11:31] And so we understand that this is an emotion that must be put under God's direction and God's leading.
[00:11:39] And when anger festers.
[00:11:43] Am I talking to anybody tonight?
[00:11:46] It turns into something we call resentment.
[00:11:50] You not only get mad, you get upset, you get even.
[00:11:54] It boils over, it grows, it never goes away.
[00:12:00] When that anger comes to light, it blows up.
[00:12:05] And that's what resentment does.
[00:12:09] There are people that display anger and the Bible.
[00:12:13] But I want you to go back to the beginning of your Bible, Genesis chapter number four. Genesis chapter number four.
[00:12:24] To set the scene, Cain and Abel were asked to bring their offerings before God.
[00:12:31] Cain's offering of the fruits of the ground, that's what he brought to God. But the Bible said the Lord didn't respect Cain's offering. It wasn't the first, it wasn't the best.
[00:12:43] But Cain had some heart issues as well. And the heart issue behind his gift was a big issue before God.
[00:12:51] And so as Cain brings his offering before God and it is rejected, what happens in Cain's heart?
[00:13:01] He gets bitter, doesn't he?
[00:13:04] Not only does he get angry, he gets bitter. Look at Genesis 4, verses 6 and 7.
[00:13:12] And the Lord said unto Cain, why art thou wroth or angry?
[00:13:17] And why is thy countenance fallen?
[00:13:20] If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.
[00:13:30] And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shall rule over him.
[00:13:37] Why are you angry?
[00:13:40] Have you ever asked somebody that question?
[00:13:42] Let me give you a little bit of marital advice.
[00:13:45] If you are in a disagreement with your spouse, don't use that question right in the middle of the argument, okay?
[00:13:53] For some reason, it adds fuel to the fire.
[00:13:56] I've done it before. Just a little word of advice.
[00:14:00] Why are you so mad? Right.
[00:14:02] That's just fuel on the fire.
[00:14:04] But what does it mean when God asks Cain, what are you doing so angry?
[00:14:10] Why are you carrying this emotion?
[00:14:13] It doesn't help you. It doesn't help anyone.
[00:14:17] And when this is your primary emotion, can I tell you a little secret?
[00:14:21] Other people can see it.
[00:14:24] And it's something that is very hard to hide.
[00:14:27] Do you know somebody close to you that is an angry person?
[00:14:34] I can name a few.
[00:14:36] Why are you angry? God's question to Cain was one that he wanted to reach not just at his emotion, he was trying to reach his heart.
[00:14:47] Cain had a heart issue.
[00:14:50] And anger affects every part of your life as well. Even the parts that others know and can see and the ones they can't see.
[00:14:59] God reminds Cain that with his help, Cain could do better.
[00:15:06] But there is a little caveat there.
[00:15:10] In verse number six, he asks, why are you angry?
[00:15:14] Why do you look angry? And in verse number seven, he says, this sin lies at the door. I wrote that little phrase on a sticky note. It'll probably come out later, sometime in my lifetime about a sermon or a devotion or something. But God was just warning Cain. Look, there's an area here that is very sinful.
[00:15:36] And if you don't get control of it with my help.
[00:15:39] I want to help you.
[00:15:41] But if you don't get control over it, it will rule over you.
[00:15:47] We can look at Jonah, we can look at Moses, we can look at Jesus.
[00:15:53] But Jesus shows us how to handle anger correctly.
[00:15:59] That doesn't mean you go home and flip the tables over in your house tonight. Okay?
[00:16:03] But what that means is this.
[00:16:05] We can be angry, are upset, and we cannot sin in it.
[00:16:12] That's what Paul writes to the Ephesians that it's okay to be angry and sin not.
[00:16:18] There's an emotion that doesn't push you to sin. So how does anger then become a sin?
[00:16:27] It's when it reaches the heart.
[00:16:29] It's when it reaches the heart. And so what God was trying to tell Cain is, this is. You've got anger rooted so deep, if you don't let me help you, take care of.
[00:16:39] Will rule your life.
[00:16:41] James, chapter number one. Oh, no. Excuse me. Excuse me. I'm gonna go Back to Ephesians 4 says this. Be angry and do not sin.
[00:16:50] Do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Listen to this.
[00:16:54] Nor give place to the devil.
[00:16:57] There's the warning from Paul. Satan can use this against you. That comes from Ephesians 4, 2, 26, 27 James, chapter 1, verses 19 and 20. So then, my beloved brethren, be every man swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
[00:17:19] Anger does not produce godly desires, and it is destructive. If it is left as a ticking time bomb, it will blow up tonight. If anger is your area of battle, here's what you need to do. You need to trust that to the Lord. And you need to put to memory James 1, 19, 20. Be every man swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. For the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Anger in our lives does not produce anything that mimics things of God.
[00:18:03] The third place of battle is temptation.
[00:18:07] As I read my Bible, there are.
[00:18:11] I don't know that I can find somebody that didn't deal with temptation. Everyone dealt with temptation, it seems like.
[00:18:17] And I believe around this room tonight, if we were honest, all of us deal with some sort of temptation.
[00:18:24] It may not look like somebody else's, but it is a part of life.
[00:18:29] And I want you to know that temptation can be resisted.
[00:18:34] Galatians 5, 16. Paul writes, Walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
[00:18:42] When we hide God's word in our heart.
[00:18:44] Even though temptations will come, they can be withstanded.
[00:18:50] Adam and Eve were tempted in the garden.
[00:18:52] Joseph, as he resisted and flee from Potiphar's wife, he resisted that temptation. But tonight I want to take you to the Old Testament, book of Daniel. Daniel, chapter number six. Daniel chapter number six is where I want you to turn. But as you are turning there, I want to ask you this. What does temptation look like?
[00:19:15] This is not an exhaustive list, but this is some of the things that temptations can be. Food, Amen. Ice cream, Amen. Food, phone, procrastination, gossip, drinking, revenge.
[00:19:34] And it can be lust filled in many different ways.
[00:19:39] Here's what you need to know.
[00:19:40] The sin with temptation is when you partake. That's where the sin is. And that's the line we walk. You watch the old cartoons. I like the old cartoons. And the other day I turned on the tv, and in my house, I usually watch one thing on tv, and it's sports. It's gotta be some kind of sports, or I'm not even interested. But I seen on their TV on the street, I seen Bugs Bunny pop up. And so I clicked over to that thing and I watched a couple of cartoons with Bugs Bunny. Just brought back memories. Yeah, I'm reminiscing. I'm getting old. Whatever you want to call it, it's okay. But in one of those things, there was a carrot that dangled. And I feel like that's what Satan does for Bugs Bunny. He couldn't resist that carrot, no matter where it was or what was happening. For some reason, he took it and he came out all right all the time. Here's what I want you to know. If you take the carrot, you may not come out all right. You may think you are.
[00:20:37] It may look like everything's okay, but Satan dangles that carrot in front of you, tempting you and be resisted. Daniel chapter number six tells the story of a young man who has the temptation to not to bow down and pray.
[00:21:00] A young man that prayed three times a day, morning and noon and night.
[00:21:05] Every day, no matter where he was, he prayed. And now, as he is in captivity, guess what?
[00:21:11] There is a decree that is put out that if anyone worships another God for 30 days, they will be thrown in the den with the lions.
[00:21:23] You know the story. Daniel, chapter six.
[00:21:26] Look at verse number seven. All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors and the princes and the counselors and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree. That whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for 30 days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
[00:21:48] Now, O king, establish the decree. And sign in writing that it may excuse me. That it be not changed by According to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not wherefore King Darius signed the writing and the decree. Now listen to this. Look at verse number 10.
[00:22:07] Now, when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, it's no surprise, it's no accident. He knows that this decree is in order.
[00:22:16] He went into his house and his windows being opened in his chamber toward Jerusalem. He kneeled upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he did aforetime, as he did long his whole life.
[00:22:35] What's the temptation?
[00:22:38] The temptation is this. Don't pray.
[00:22:43] What, battles for your prayer time?
[00:22:46] Listen, listen, listen. In America, it's not the threat of a lion's den.
[00:22:52] We're tired, we're busy, we're running ragged.
[00:22:58] And guess what?
[00:23:00] That carrot's just dangling right there.
[00:23:05] And in some ways, godly people have bowed to another idol.
[00:23:15] And so the temptation for Daniel was this. I don't have to pray, and I'll be just fine.
[00:23:26] I won't get the lion's den if I just. It's only for 30 days.
[00:23:34] How many of you tonight say, I can't go one day without praying?
[00:23:38] That was Daniel's attitude.
[00:23:42] I can't make it one day.
[00:23:44] I can't make it without God.
[00:23:46] Come what may, I'm going to bow to my God.
[00:23:53] Temptation.
[00:23:55] Temptation to think everything's okay. No one will notice. If I just do this for a little while, it will be okay.
[00:24:04] And we're taught not to compromise with our faith.
[00:24:11] I don't care what that temptation looks like.
[00:24:15] Tonight, if temptation is your battlefield, I want to give you a verse of scripture from First Corinthians, chapter number 10, verse number 13, First Corinthians, chapter number 10, Verse number 13. Here is your verse. There hath no temptation taken you, but such is common to man. But God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation, also make a way to escape that you may be able to bear it.
[00:24:50] There is a way out.
[00:24:52] And how many people know the Daniel story? The way out of the lion's den is to get in the lion's den.
[00:25:01] There's a way out.
[00:25:02] If you trust God, God will help you.
[00:25:07] The fourth area of battle, these two will be fairly quickly. I say that, and I'm a preacher. I don't mean to tell you a few of them. I'm going to try to make them quickly.
[00:25:16] The last two areas are feelings that we deal with.
[00:25:21] The first one is the feeling of pride, the thoughts of pride.
[00:25:28] We have discussed Lucifer desiring to be God, and pride led to his fall. We think of the Tower of Babel in Genesis chapter number 11, that people desire to make a name for themselves. We can point to Nebuchadnezzar and Pharaoh and Saul, all dealing with pride in the Old Testament. But I want to take you to the New Testament. Luke, chapter number 18. Luke, chapter number 18. You'll probably hear a sermon one of these days when I get there about this, but Luke chapter number 18, verses 9 through 14.
[00:26:04] Listen to this parable that Jesus shares. And he spake a parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself. God, I thank thee that I'm not as other men are, extortioners of unjust adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up much his eyes into heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me. A sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house, justified rather than the other. For every one that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbled himself shall be exalted. Pride.
[00:26:53] The Pharisee and tax collector, both of them offer prayers to God.
[00:26:59] And the Pharisee just boasts that he isn't like other people. He isn't even like this tax collector. He fasts twice a week. He gives his money like he should, and he's looking to himself and he's thinking about himself. He's actually praying to God about how good he is.
[00:27:16] He's full of pride.
[00:27:19] Self righteousness must take a back seat.
[00:27:22] Pride must bow down to God.
[00:27:25] Just as the tax collector beats his chest and he can't turn his eyes upward, he asks for God's mercy.
[00:27:33] And Jesus says, this man is justified. He is heard and he is forgiven because of his humility.
[00:27:42] Pride looks to depend on itself rather than depending on God. You know the proverb, Proverbs 16:18. Pride goes before the fall or destruction, a hasty spirit before a fall. But I want to give you, I want to remind you, James 4:6.
[00:28:02] But he giveth more grace.
[00:28:05] God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
[00:28:11] So if pride is an issue for you, it's a battleground. Satan can use that to make you think that you're something, that you're really not.
[00:28:22] That you're strong enough to face this on your own. Guess what? You're not.
[00:28:29] That you can figure this out without God. You don't need God.
[00:28:34] Pride creeps in.
[00:28:36] So be careful. The last is the issue or the feeling of guilt.
[00:28:43] Guilt in a spiritual sense does one or two things. Guilt can push you towards the Lord in a good way or guilt can push you away from the Lord.
[00:28:55] And that's what Satan, the accuser wants to do. Remember, he is labeled as the accuser. So he wants you to make. He wants to make you think that you're guilty, that you're not good enough, that you're not worthy, that you've been too bad. That's the accuser at work. That's the guilt that rests on many shoulders in this world.
[00:29:17] Unbelievers. Listen to me. Unbelievers should feel guilty.
[00:29:22] And I don't mean that in a bad way.
[00:29:25] Unbelievers should feel the need to for Jesus.
[00:29:30] And that guilt should push them to the one that can offer forgiveness, which is the Lord.
[00:29:36] But if you believe in Jesus, why do you carry guilt?
[00:29:43] Because it's been forgiven.
[00:29:47] The sins of yesterday, today and tomorrow are under his blood.
[00:29:52] And so when we think about that guilt, when we come to Jesus asking for forgiveness, listen, he forgives you.
[00:30:04] And godly people need to understand that when you ask God to forgive you as a believer, he forgives you.
[00:30:13] And so tonight we may think that we're losing a battle of guilt.
[00:30:22] We have liberty and freedom.
[00:30:24] Yes, and that. But I want to share a verse with you first. John, chapter number one, verse number nine. Many of you probably can Quote it. My prayer is that if you know this verse or if you deal with guilt, that this verse will be on your heart. Listen to first John, chapter one, verse number nine. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[00:30:56] That's the only reason Jeffrey Campbell's standing before you tonight.
[00:31:01] Tonight. Do you deal with guilt?
[00:31:03] Do you carry that?
[00:31:06] It's a feeling that you don't, that you shouldn't be carrying, especially if you are a believer in Jesus Christ tonight, lay it down at his feet. And the Bible says if you ask for his forgiveness, he will forgive you.
[00:31:21] I started out with 10, only could get through five.
[00:31:26] The next five will be the next time we meet, which will not be next Wednesday because of a revival. It will be two weeks from tonight.
[00:31:35] But when we think about these five things, can anybody relate?
[00:31:44] Yes, we can relate because we know that the spiritual battle is real.
[00:31:51] And so tonight, as we close this study, I just want to lead us in a moment of prayer to come before the Lord and to lay these issues before him.
[00:32:01] And so, as we move into our prayer time, I just desire to lead you. Now, can we bow together, Father God, Lord, thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
[00:32:13] And Lord, as we look to your word for help, not just relying on our own strength or our own ideas or even the pastor's ideas, God, I pray that you will just go before us now, Lord. Maybe there's somebody that deals with anxiety and fear, God, today. I pray right now in these moments, Lord, that you will remind them that you have not given them a spirit of fear, God. I pray, Lord, that you will remind them of your power and your love and that you will give them a sound mind, God, Move in that area of battle, I pray for the one that deals with anger and resentment, God. I pray, Lord, that you will continue to lead in those areas of forgiveness, Lord, and to show that.
[00:33:01] But also, Lord, as anger creeps in, Lord, that folks will be able to fall down and to give that to you, Lord, when that anger arises, Lord, I pray that we be swift to hear and slow to speak and slow to anger, Lord, if someone deals with temptation, Lord, I think we all deal with something in that area, God. I thank you, Lord, for showing us, Lord, that there's no temptation that can come before us, that you will not make a way out for us as believers. So, Lord, may we trust you. May we lean into your leading when those temptations arise, Lord, the area of pride, Lord, will you teach us humility?
[00:33:47] And Lord, in the area of guilt? God, will you teach us just to trust, trust the blood of Jesus for forgiveness over our life?
[00:33:56] God thank you Lord that you are just to forgive tonight as we bring these needs before you, God, I pray that you just search our hearts, search our minds. Lord, you know us better than anybody in this world.
