[00:00:00] Welcome to the March 8 sermon from Clifford Baptist Church, 635 Fletcher's Level Road in Amherst. Today's scripture is Luke, chapter 4, verses 1 through 13. And the sermon is entitled the Battle of Temptation, delivered today by Pastor Jeffrey Campbell. I usually begin with a story or something. I just want to begin with prayer today. If we could bow our hearts together, God. Thank you, Lord. Thank you just for how you just take a bunch of people, Lord, and you gather them around your word.
[00:00:26] They're not looking and listening to a preacher. Oh, God, we pray that your word will be the truth that sets us free today.
[00:00:34] God, as we look to you, Lord, in a very sensitive subject of temptation, Lord, we understand that we can never be removed from it, God, by your power, Lord, we can overcome it.
[00:00:48] And yes, everything will be all right, Lord, today.
[00:00:53] Hide me behind the cross, Lord. And I pray that the people do not hear one word of Jeffrey Campbell.
[00:00:58] But they only hear your word because your word is truth.
[00:01:01] Lord, today we look to you to lead us during this time. In Jesus name, Amen.
[00:01:10] Luke, chapter number four. As we begin our study and our opening of Luke chapter four, Church. This is going to take us all the way to Easter. Okay, I'm just going to be honest with you. Luke, chapter four. As we break it into pieces and parts, it's amazing that the truth of God is in it all. And my prayer is that you came expecting God to speak to you today in some way. That you know God and that you're growing in God and that you're going with God and that he's continuing to guide your life. But as we gather together as the collective people of God today, there is one subject that affects every man and woman that is in the room today. Whether you're in here today or you're watching live stream, here's what I know and here's what the Bible teaches. There's not one person that doesn't deal with temptation.
[00:02:06] Amen.
[00:02:08] So from the pulpit to the pew, this message is for every single one of us. Whether it is a child who has to battle the urge of disobedience, or a teenager who struggles to fit in, or maybe there's a parent in the room that has worry or anxiety.
[00:02:29] We can look at procrastination.
[00:02:33] We can look at overeating.
[00:02:36] We can look at lust or illegal drugs or alcohol or. Or pride or power. Each of these are opportunities, but they're also definitions of temptation.
[00:02:50] There are many other words that fit this description that we are going to see today.
[00:02:55] But today, as you Read your Bible.
[00:02:58] You cannot go through the pages of your Bible without realizing that, yes, Adam and Eve and Job and. And Cain and David and Samson and Judas and Peter all dealt with temptation.
[00:03:13] And here's the reality today that Jesus himself was tempted.
[00:03:20] And so I can say from the authority of the word of God, everybody from Adam to Jesus has been tempted.
[00:03:29] And everybody from Jesus forward will face temptation as well.
[00:03:36] When we understand why this had to happen in Jesus life today, we see that he was on a very spiritual high.
[00:03:48] He's coming off of his baptism.
[00:03:51] He is full of the Holy Spirit, he is beginning his ministry. And as soon as all of that starts, can guess what happened.
[00:04:01] Satan shows up.
[00:04:04] And maybe you can relate to that, that you have been on some spiritual h. You have been faithful to God. And as soon as those things are happening, things seem to be going good in your spiritual life. Guess what?
[00:04:21] Temptation comes knocking.
[00:04:24] And that temptation meant to draw you away from the will of God.
[00:04:31] And so today, as we look at this scripture, we see that from that spiritual high that Jesus is beginning ministry to now, he is going to spend 40 days dealing with temptation. What does that teach you? And what does it teach me? Today, as we go to the word of God, we are going to think about this subject. The battle with temptation. The battle with temptation. Let's look at Luke, chapter number four, verses one through four.
[00:05:06] And Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being 40 days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing.
[00:05:20] When they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, if thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
[00:05:30] And Jesus answered him, saying, it is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
[00:05:39] There are three ways, three areas of our lives where we will deal with temptation.
[00:05:47] It's a known fact, and Jesus proves that. And today I want to share those with you. The first area of your life where the battle of temptation rages is in your personal needs.
[00:06:00] In your personal needs.
[00:06:03] We are reminded from the scene of Jesus baptism that the Spirit of God descended on him. It rest on Jesus, and God voiced his pleasure. Remember that. What did the voice of God say as we studied it last week? Here's what it said.
[00:06:21] This is my son.
[00:06:24] And who I am well pleased. Y' all remember that this is the Son of God.
[00:06:31] The voice of God announced, this is my son. This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Well, we see that Luke records at the beginning of chapter four that Jesus is full of the Holy Spirit. Now, I'm not going to go down this rabbit trail, but there's a difference of being full of the Holy Spirit and filled with the Holy Spirit. You and I are filled with the Holy Spirit, but Jesus, because he is God, he is full of the Holy Spirit, he doesn't need to be filled. He is already full, constantly full of the Holy Spirit. But it's that Holy Spirit that leads him now. And of all places, we see at the beginning of chapter number four, of all places, he goes to the wilderness.
[00:07:16] Any of you had a wilderness experience before? You know where you know that you are being tempted and you're being tested and you feel like, hey, there's a battle raging and I'm in the middle of nowhere and no one will help me. Here's what you need to understand. God is there. Even in the wilderness time, even in the times of temptation, God can be there. And so today, when we think about this personal need, Luke tells us this.
[00:07:44] As he enters that 40 days of temptation, he is not relying on any physical necessities to help him during this 40 days, as you see in your Bible, in those 40 days, he was tempted of the devil. And. And in those days, he did eat nothing, according to verse number two. Now, how many of you can make it 40 days without eating?
[00:08:08] Thank you for being honest. Thank you. Thank you.
[00:08:12] I probably can make it three, maybe three.
[00:08:15] But when we realize what our body physically needs, it needs food.
[00:08:20] And you're sitting here saying, pastor Jeffrey, if I go without food, I'm going to die.
[00:08:27] I'm gonna die.
[00:08:28] But what Jesus shows us is this 40 days he was tempted. 40 days in the wilderness in the middle of nowhere, 40 days with the devil and 40 days without food, this man is a sitting duck for Satan to come and tempt him.
[00:08:48] Now, I don't know about you, you don't have to go to the wilderness and you don't have to stay there 40 days. But here's what I want you to understand. When you get away and the devil gets close, temptation will come.
[00:09:02] And when we think about this first temptation, what stands out about it is this.
[00:09:09] Satan begins calling Jesus. Hey, Jesus, if you're the son of God, do you see that?
[00:09:21] If you're the Son of God. Now listen, time out. God has already told him he was the Son of God.
[00:09:28] Remember, this is my son and who I am well pleased. And so immediately the devil starts twisting that, hey, Jesus, if you really are the Son of God, then take this stone and make it into a piece of bread.
[00:09:48] Now, I don't know about you, but if. If I had that power, it definitely would not be bread. It'd probably be a ribeye steak. Okay, like, I understand we gotta realize the time frame here, but hey, Jesus, if you're the Son of God, you're alone. You're in the wilderness, you're by yourself. You're being tempted, you're hungry. You have the power to take this stone.
[00:10:15] Feed yourself, Jesus. Do it.
[00:10:21] Satan recognizes weaknesses.
[00:10:28] And Satan also knows that Jesus is fully man. Because the Bible tells us this, that Jesus was hungry.
[00:10:40] He knows Jesus weakness, and he comes to him as Jesus the man and challenges us this. If you truly are the Son of God, you can take care of your own needs.
[00:10:54] Make that rock a piece of bread and just satisfy that hunger, satisfy your personal needs.
[00:11:04] How many times are we tempted to satisfy our needs instead of relying on God to give us exactly what we need?
[00:11:15] That's the temptation here. Because for 40 days without food, God was going to take care of Jesus.
[00:11:21] God was going to give him everything he needed. Every single day, God was going to take care of him. But here's the temptation, Jesus, don't rely on God.
[00:11:31] Do it yourself, because you are His Son.
[00:11:38] Many times we are tempted to satisfy our personal needs and our personal desires. And in our own mind, we convince ourselves that it is okay, that is necessary and that we need to do it. Luke shows us this, that even a basic need can be a temptation.
[00:12:03] Food can be a temptation.
[00:12:08] Even though we need can tempt us in the wrong way.
[00:12:14] Even though every man and woman and boy and girl in this room needs to feel loved when we need to feel loved, we can be tempted in so many wrong ways.
[00:12:27] And so church, what I need you to understand today, as we think that we can meet our own needs and we can meet our own desires, we shortcut God and get him out of the way. And we fall for temptation.
[00:12:43] The temptation here is this.
[00:12:46] God will take care of you if you let him.
[00:12:50] But the temptation is this.
[00:12:52] You don't need him.
[00:12:54] Take care of it yourself, Jesus. Reply to this temptation is one that we need to understand.
[00:13:04] In verse number four, Jesus answered and said, it is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
[00:13:14] Friends, here's the reality. The Lord wants to feed every single one of you.
[00:13:20] The Lord wants to take care of us. The Lord wants us to depend on him and feed off of His Word. The Lord wants to supply our needs and when we understand that God can do that, many times, we factor him out and we go our own way.
[00:13:40] Now I want to thank that Jesus could have performed a miracle.
[00:13:43] Jesus done many miracles in the Bible. He could have took that rock and he could have made it bread and he could have ate that bread and it would have satisfied his hunger. But you know the reality. Guess what?
[00:13:54] He would have been hungry again.
[00:13:58] He would have hungered again.
[00:14:01] And so many times. Temptation doesn't feed us one time. It continues to desire to feed us and feed us and feed us.
[00:14:10] And that's the danger. Not that we are overeating, but we are being filled with many temptations.
[00:14:19] And so today, no matter what that temptation looks like, we got to rely on the Father's provision. And that's what Jesus teaches us. Jesus demonstrates to us that even when it sounds okay to try to meet our own needs, that we must rely on God.
[00:14:41] How many of you know that that temptation comes when you have physical needs?
[00:14:48] Just say amen.
[00:14:51] Four areas.
[00:14:53] When you get hungry, when you get lonely, when you get stressed, and when you get tired, you better watch out.
[00:15:07] Temptation will come.
[00:15:11] And so today, when we think about those physical needs, will we seek the Lord's help in those moments where we are weak and that we will feed off of his every word?
[00:15:26] God can take care of your needs.
[00:15:28] Don't rely on temptation.
[00:15:32] Point number two. Look at verses five through eight.
[00:15:38] I want to say this before I read Temptation number one failed.
[00:15:43] God did not fall for it. It failed.
[00:15:46] So Satan moves on. Verse number five. And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, all this power will I give thee and the glory of them, for that is delivered unto me and to whomsoever excuse me, I will, I give it.
[00:16:09] If thou therefore wilt worship me, it shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, get thee behind me, Satan. For it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shall thy serve.
[00:16:25] The point number two, an area that we are tempted is with a power grab.
[00:16:34] Power.
[00:16:37] The first temptation failed. So Satan takes him up on the mountain. And I can't explain how Satan does this, but Satan shows him all the kingdoms of all the world at one time.
[00:16:50] And here's what Satan says. I'll give you the power and the glory over it all if you will worship me.
[00:16:58] If you'll simply just fall down and you'll worship, I'll give you all that Power.
[00:17:06] And as I don't even think Jesus considers this, but as Satan offers this to Jesus, he offers it to him as the prince of this world. How many of you know that? The Bible teaches us that Satan is the prince of the world, but he also teaches us in Ephesians that he's the prince of the power of the air. And so what he offers is this. All the power that he could offer him. All the power of this world, Jesus, it will all be yours if you will just fall down and worship.
[00:17:38] But what's the real temptation?
[00:17:41] The real temptation is not that he will fall down and worship, but that he will take the shortcut.
[00:17:48] Because here's what the temptation is. If you fall down and worship, you can have all the power that God has already gifted you, already promised you. But you don't have to go to the cross and you don't have to endure what it would take that week leading into it. The beatings and the scourgings, the trials, the crucifixion, the death. You will not have to take any of that.
[00:18:14] You will not have to lay in a bar tomb for three days. You will not have to rise again. If you just bow down Jesus, you can have it all. I'll give it to you.
[00:18:23] Well, I believe Satan is promising something that he can only give a limited amount of it. He can't give it all.
[00:18:30] But in verse number eight, we see Jesus answered and said, get thee behind me, Satan, for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
[00:18:45] Have you ever sacrificed God's will for a shortcut?
[00:18:51] For a power grab, For a moment of satisfaction?
[00:18:56] Have you ever done that?
[00:18:58] You see, there's only one worthy of worship and that is the Lord God.
[00:19:02] And the Bible says he is the one that we shall serve.
[00:19:06] But Jesus is leaving no confusion in the matter. He says this. I'm not going to bow down and I'm not going to worship you and Satan, if you don't mind, just take this moment and get behind me so it cannot be even confused that I am worshiping you. Some of us today by the power of God, need to command Satan to get behind us. It's a command of resistance, not to even give consideration or chance that he was bowing in worship. And Jesus turns to the word of God again, signifying there is no shortcut that is worthy of the sacrifice and the service and the worship of the Lord.
[00:19:42] Often we may be tempted by the promise of power and control.
[00:19:47] The temptation, it comes with a Cost. But if it. If it. If it doesn't go with God's will, if it neglects God's will and it's planned for your life, it's not worth it. Many with the promise of promotion and power have turned their worship away from God. And they have bowed at the foot of the tempter.
[00:20:08] What does that mean? What does that look like? A little bit of power.
[00:20:13] A little bit of power is neglected. Over the past week, two pastors, two more pastors fail to temptation out of the ministry. God has not won. Satan has. When I read those things in the headlines, it breaks my heart. It should break your heart as a believer. But here's what that teaches us. No person in this room is limited from where Satan will reach to get you to fall.
[00:20:41] And some people, he raises them in power and position only to see them fall.
[00:20:47] And so we must be careful. Men, as the head of your house, don't fall to temptation because there are many that are watching. Your children, your wife are depending on you. Mothers, be careful with temptation. You've got little eyes and you've got. You've got a grown man's eyes watching you.
[00:21:04] Oh, church leaders, this should sound as a warning to us all. You better be careful because Satan just wants you to bow down.
[00:21:11] But here's the reality. Jesus was on the mountaintop. It was just him and Satan alone. Jesus could have fell down and no one would have seen it. Right?
[00:21:21] How many of us have fell for that lie? That nobody will ever know.
[00:21:26] And here's what Jesus says. Jesus says, no, Satan, right now you get behind me.
[00:21:34] You get behind me, because I will not bow at your feet today.
[00:21:39] There's only one that we must serve and fall down and bow before. And his name is Jesus.
[00:21:48] Be careful.
[00:21:50] The world is calling you to fall down at its feet.
[00:21:55] Temptation. Satan, alive and well, ready to devour the men and women and families of God.
[00:22:05] Don't fall for the promise of power.
[00:22:09] There's one more point. Look at verse 9 through 13.
[00:22:13] And he brought him into Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said unto him, if thou be the Son of God. There's those words again.
[00:22:21] Cast thyself down from thence, for it is written, he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou shalt dash thy foot against the stone. And Jesus answering, said unto him, it is said, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
[00:22:41] And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him.
[00:22:46] Listen to this for a season.
[00:22:49] Point number three, be careful of the protected act.
[00:22:54] Protected act.
[00:22:56] You've heard this story before. Satan and Jesus go to Jerusalem.
[00:23:00] You remember that this is the city he would weep over. This is the city he would care about. This is the city that would not accept him. But as he goes to Jerusalem, he goes to the top of the temple and looking out and looking down. How many of you know? Never. How many of you know that when you go on high places, you never look down, right? But guess what? From that high pinnacle place, Jesus is looking out over Jerusalem. But also, here's the chapter, look down, Jesus, look down. And as you look down, Satan employs a very familiar tactic. He quotes scripture to Jesus.
[00:23:36] He says this in Psalm 91. He's quoting Psalm 91. He says this.
[00:23:41] It's written, he shall give his angels charge over thee and keep thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou shalt dash thy foot against the stone.
[00:23:52] Hey, Jesus, listen. As we're standing on top of the temple, looking over Jerusalem, looking down at the ground, here's what you need to do. Jump off the building.
[00:24:02] Because God's word says that his angels will protect you. That you won't even stump your toe. Because God's angels are protecting you. A protected act, a direct challenge of God's word.
[00:24:16] You have nothing to be worried about, Jesus. If you jump, guess what? God's word says. Nothing's gonna happen to you. It will be the greatest miracle. People will flock to believe you. It will be great.
[00:24:29] But if it doesn't, it's not the fall that hurts.
[00:24:33] That sudden stop will show that God is not real. Don't you dare do anything that jeopardizes your life that you think God will save you from. Do you hear me? Don't tempt God. Because just because God doesn't show up doesn't mean God's not real.
[00:24:56] When we look at what Satan's tactic is, he takes God's word and begins to twist it and throw it up, daring Jesus to do something so God will show up.
[00:25:09] And many of us have done it in a different form. God, if you do this, I'll do this.
[00:25:16] You're tempting God.
[00:25:18] You're testing God. No, God wants you to walk by faith, not by sight.
[00:25:24] God wants you to be faithful. No matter what. No matter what you want, God wants you to be faithful.
[00:25:31] So as we look at Jesus response, he begins to quote the word of God From Deuteronomy, chapter 6. Thou shalt not Tempt the Lord thy God.
[00:25:42] So be careful when you try to manipulate God by purposefully manipulating situations and tempting and putting God on trial.
[00:25:53] There's a story about a young pilot who graduated at the top of his class. He got up, he put in all his hours, he put in the schooling, he became a pilot. He was a young man trying to earn a living, and he began that living. But the opportunity opened up for him to fly a commercial flight. And this young man had put in a lot of time and he had been flying around and that job opened up for him to go and fly passenger planes.
[00:26:21] This young man, he needed the money. But the problem is he hadn't had much sleep and there was a storm that was brewing. So as he took that opportunity and he sat in that cockpit of that plane, he was contemplating, should I still fly this plane when I with hundreds of people on it, even though I'm tired and even though there's a storm coming, but I need the money? As I said, he graduated top of his class. He had learned what he needed to do. He knew what he needed to do.
[00:26:48] But should he jeopardize everybody else's life for what he needed in the cockpit pit of that plane? This young man decided, this is not my place to fly this plane.
[00:27:01] Luckily, they had somebody on standby, and this young pilot, he stepped out, he. He let somebody step in and make that trip.
[00:27:08] He writes later on that this was one of the most career defining moves that he ever made.
[00:27:15] Why? Because the temptation of. Of money and knowing what to do was there.
[00:27:22] The temptation of. Of you can make it through this storm was there.
[00:27:27] But the reality of all those hundreds of people whose lives he was responsible for and the event something went wrong weighed him over.
[00:27:38] This young pilot should be commended because he gave up his seat. He gave up the seat in the cockpit to somebody else. Well, today, here's what I want to tell you.
[00:27:48] There's some of you that are flying in the sea of temptation. Over and over and over.
[00:27:54] You know all about it. You've made loops, you've been through it. You continue to do it. But. But here's what you need to do. You need to vacate that seat and let the Savior take over. You've been flying in the same area. You know the route, you know the temptation. You know what's going to happen because you've done it before. Vacate the seat and let God take over. Here's what temptation does.
[00:28:17] Temptation promises something right now. But listen to me. Faith and obedience in God is a process. It will not happen right now.
[00:28:27] There are no shortcuts when it comes to following Jesus.
[00:28:32] If it's too good to be true, guess what? It probably is.
[00:28:37] Don't fall for that temptation.
[00:28:39] And thirdly, temptation doesn't end.
[00:28:45] It just moves to a different season.
[00:28:49] And we see that from Jesus life as he finished this 40 days of temptation. It's not, oh yeah, I defeated the devil, that's done.
[00:28:58] No, that's just round one because he's coming back for more. How can you handle temptation?
[00:29:06] By what we've learned today, friends, we need to be led by the Spirit to stay in the will of God. And this still doesn't mean you will not face temptation.
[00:29:17] Secondly, you need to look to God, you need to submit and pray. And you have a helper to the Holy Spirit that will give you strength.
[00:29:25] And you need to love the Word. You need to get in the word of God so the word of God will get into you. One of Jesus's biggest tactics here was speaking scripture back to the tempter.
[00:29:37] You need to know the word of God. The word of God is that two edged sword. It is a weapon and it will defeat the tempter. Thirdly, you need to know the tempter. Satan is the tempter according to Acts 5 and Revelation chapter 12. And here's the reality. Satan knows where you are weak. The second thing that Satan knows is Satan knows God's word and he knows how to twist it. Thirdly, Satan knows that when you, when he tempts you, it might be round one, you win. But round two is coming soon.
[00:30:10] The tempter continues to tempt. JC Ryle said it best.
[00:30:15] Nowhere perhaps is the devil so active in church. Today as we think about temptation, I want to leave you with this. First Corinthians, chapter 10, verse number 13. There hath no temptation taken you, but such as common to man.
[00:30:31] God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted. Above that you are able, but will with temptation also make a way to escape that you may be able to bear it. What does this teach us? Number one, you aren't the only one dealing with temptation.
[00:30:46] Number two, that God is faithful and we need to look to him because he knows your limits and he provides a way out.
[00:30:55] Praise be to God. Where are you being tempted? Church. Is it in the personal needs?
[00:31:00] At times when you are the lowest or the loneliness or loneliest or the stressed, most tired? When you have those physical needs, are you being tempted?
[00:31:11] Maybe there's a control of power.
[00:31:14] The moment that you Think you are there and you have it all. And you have reached your goals and you are at the top. Get ready, because here comes the temptation. Who are you truly bowing to at that point? And thirdly, if you think you're invincible, you better wait. You better be ready. You're not to be removed from temptation.
[00:31:35] The tempter knows where you are weak. Maybe today my final call is this. Maybe you're tempted today to leave this church, leave this place of worship the exact same way you came in. You got it figured out.
[00:31:48] You don't need Jesus. You can handle it yourself.
[00:31:53] Maybe today you're tempted to wait till another time or another day to come to the Lord for his help. Today, here's what we need to do. Christians need to run to Jesus.
[00:32:03] And maybe an altar is the place where you bow down and say, God, God, I'm not the most horrible person in the world, but every one of us face temptation. Here's the reality. The whole church should be at the altar this morning. Cause we all face temptation.
[00:32:16] Maybe today you want to run to Jesus. God, I belong to you.
[00:32:21] But boy, do I feel Satan's battle.
[00:32:26] Do I feel the battle raging in my heart and in my life and in my actions. Oh God, take those actions and turn them to actions that glorify you instead of fall for the tempter. Today, if you don't believe in Jesus, don't be tempted to leave here without him.
[00:32:43] He is your hope today. If you need him, I pray that you'll come. Let's go to the Lord, Father God, thank you, oh God, that your word tells us that we are just simply sinners in need of a savior.
[00:33:00] Oh God, as we come to a moment of invitation, Lord, I pray, Lord, that. That you will not let the tempter play with minds and hearts that don't belong to you. And oh God, in this moment, Lord, if there's one that needs you, a savior, Lord, that recognizes that your death and your blood paid their sin debt on an old rugged cross. You went, Lord, to pay their payment of death. God, on the third day you rose to give them hope and a life and a future. Oh God, if somebody's tempted to walk away from Jesus today, God, I pray that your Holy Spirit would move for the Christians in the room. Maybe there's a man or woman or boy or girl that's not going to come here and just say I'm the worst person in the world.
[00:33:44] That's what Satan's telling them right now so they don't come and bow before God, but they'll continue to worship the tempter.
[00:33:51] Maybe there's a Christian today that'll walk and kneel before God and say, God, I need your help.
[00:33:58] God, I'm facing this temptation.
[00:34:01] Oh God, I'm tired of doing it my way alone without you. God, I pray that you will feel that one today with the courage enough to walk and bow to worship Jesus and then rise again to walk with our eyes on Him. God, I pray they'll let you use this message as Pastor Nathan prayed today to change lives and plant seeds.
[00:34:27] God, we trust that you do that in our life, and we give it to you now. In Jesus name.
